Talking about an impending society collapse is normal now. Even five years ago people didn’t talk about the apocalypse and ya know… kind of mean it…. Isn’t that interesting? I met a random guy on the beach a few months ago who is building community and learning him homesteading skills in case the world collapses. And I did not find him weird! Thank you for sharing this.
Wow! I've noticed this too. Wonder what made the shift, perhaps its the fact that we're all beginning to actually see/witness/experience climate change ourselves and yet govs are still slow to move?
This post is inspiring. The theme of slowness is where my mind lands these days too. I've always struggled with the buy ethical thing and support local ethical businesses because I then want to buy ALL their products. I have to remind myself that it's not my job alone to keep them in business. Lol
I also think , how am I going to save the world for my children?? But maybe smaller, slower things like being fully present with them and making sure they know they are loved and safe will help them be more confident and resilient for whatever lies ahead.
I also need to up my cooking game. Tricky when I have picky children and my husband and I have specific dietary restrictions/needs. Thanks for this food for thought, Isabelle!! 😊
Thanks Sarah! Deffo feel the cooking and all the different dietary restrictions pain--my advice is cooking in bulk and freezing, then you only have to worry a couple days a week lol!
Yes yes yes! Building resilience and letting your kids know their safe is the best thing you can do as a parent. :)
This is a great read and critically important. There’s a quote that goes along the lines of “I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” From EB White that summarizes what you outlined well. The additional challenge is how we define savor - and this needs a lot work like you outlined- and saving the world isn’t going to happen over night or realistically in our lifetimes, if at all. But we still do the work. Thanks for sharing Isabelle
Thanks Zach. Oh I love this quote. So many people want to save the world in different ways, and this includes lots of techno-optimist. Nevertheless, we still do the work! :)
A great piece Isabelle. I’m an old person now but this resonates with me. I’m still rushing about and wondering when I get to be the wise old bird. I’m reading Dougal Hines “At Work in the Ruins”. Do you know it?
Enjoying it, although I find the philosophy approach quite daunting these days - lack of focus! I live in Hebden Bridge which has got a reputation for community. But since the pandemic I think we’re struggling. Lots of people moving here, work from home, don’t seem to want to get engaged? We’re starting a market garden to help the local food economy, it’s a struggle!
I know what you mean, though sometimes I feel the philosophical writings give me lots more to think about then the more practical approaches. Like doughnut economics--sounds great but what do *I* do? But maybe that's just my brain...
Very interesting to get. I think it's so HARD to get people out their house nowadays. Especially since the pandemic changed how we seem to live entirely. And people who do want to get out their house aren't sure where to start. I think every town needs some sort of community hub to know what the hell to do next... Intrigued to hear how the market garden is going! I've tried to attend one local community garden type place but it's always during work hours!!!
one step at a time girly!!! it all truly starts at an individual level. can't fill up other people's cups unless our own is full. love that you're making more time for you and stepping away from the screen time contagion. and love that you're finding your people in Birmingham, it always takes longer than we want it to, but it is oh so worthwhile! love and sanity to you :')
You’ve helped me so much Isabelle. I have new hope working in my difficult industries (maybe all industries are at some level)... Hope, and happiness, that my new partners may effect restorative change, and slowly, and surely, because they care.
They know what it’s like to come too close to losing everything…
I value your writing, trust and believe in you. Please keep being, just, you = on point like no one I’ve met, across industries… and what the world needs so badly, especially now. You lead with kind presence. Thank you.
