Thank you for writing this Isabelle!! Amanda mull wrote something about Amazon that has shaped a lot of my thinking since — along the lines of how one person boycotting Amazon may not matter much to Jeff bezos, but it means much more for the small business owner or craftsperson to have one more customer when we purchase something from them instead. I so agree with you both — Thinking in the additive rather than subtractive is so much more invigorating *and* convincing!

And of course, we can move even further as you say and focus on benefits of a sustainable life beyond consumption at all!

AHHH I never heard this before but I LOVE it. It makes so much sense. I've been writing about individual action and this is such a lovely way to frame it.

Such an excellent reframe, Isabelle. An entire book could be written on this. What at first may seem like a sacrifice can actually bring unexpected gifts--like time, freedom, and a sense of peace. I've noticed this with some choices to reduce consumption--it feels good, for example, to hang my laundry on the line instead of tossing it in the dryer. I get more time outside; I'm conserving energy; and I'm adding more movement to my day. There are many win-wins like this, and the reframe you highlight here is so important: to show that these Earth-friendly choices can feel good for their own sake. I think the pivot we need is to see that many of the convenience choices we think make our lives better, actually aren't. But sometimes we need to try the alternative to learn that for ourselves.

yes! I think it's a lot of internalised capitalism, we're all trying to rush and save time and get ahead in life, not quite sure what for really. I think we need to go back to what makes a life truly worth living and rebuild our culture from there.
